How much do you charge for counseling sessions?
It depends on whether or not you are using insurance, doing couples counseling, or paying privately. We can discuss your situation specifically.
How long are therapy sessions?
Generally 53-60 minutes.
How often should we do counseling?
Standard in our profession is every 2 weeks. Most clients choose what is best for them, including weekly. Gradually as you improve, counseling can move to what seems best for you.
I’ve never done counseling before, what can I expect?
We start by getting to know each other and build rapport. I never expect you to automatically trust me, but rather create a trusting and safe environment. Our first session is a general assessment to get to know the different aspects of your life. I typically start with understanding what your life has been like, including the quality of your relationships now and growing up. In couples counseling we start to understand the pattern you go through together that keeps you stuck.
What is your role as a therapist?
If I was a perfect therapist and had answers to all of life’s problems, I wouldn’t need to get to know you. My role is rather one of facilitating understanding with your patterns of thinking, finding events in your life that have led to problems, model openness and acceptance, create a safe place to learn new skills and different ways of thinking, and help you love and accept yourself fundamentally for the good that is in you. When you start to see yourself differently, lasting change takes place. I’m here to open that door with you to make it safe to learn.
